ULAKNET was established by TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM in order to establish and operate networks between universities and research institutions for research and education purposes, and to ensure the connection of these networks with domestic and international networks.

In 2020, TÜBİTAK ULAKBIM and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality signed a Cooperation Protocol for the Establishment of Electronic Communication Infrastructure between TÜBİTAK ULAKBIM and Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in order to ensure the connection of ULAKNET ends located within the borders of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality directly over its own infrastructure.

A contract was signed with the contractor company on July 14, 2021 for the Phase-1 work, which constitutes the first phase of the work carried out within the scope of the signed protocol and covers the establishment of fiber optic infrastructure between Ege University and the ULAKNET İZMİR Node located in the Rectorate building of Dokuz Eylül University. After the completion of this work and commissioning of the infrastructure, the Phase-2 work covering the campuses of Dokuz Eylül University will begin.
