Following the special issue on "Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Development" of the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences published by TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, a webinar titled "International Workshop on Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Development-GeoESD2021" was held on December 8, 2021.
Within the scope of the webinar, researchers presented original studies published in the special issue on topics such as global developments on geothermal resources, underground injection of CO2, different uses of geothermal fluid (agriculture, tourism, health, etc.), mineral recovery in geothermal systems, hot dry rock technologies and their importance, and predictions on the role of the use of geothermal resources in reducing CO2 from fossil fuels in the world. The webinar, where a total of 19 researchers were invited and 16 presentations were made, was watched live by over 100 people via Zoom and YouTube. In addition, projected developments in the geothermal field over the next decade were shared and participants discussed what kind of collaborations could be developed in this field.
The trend towards the utilization of renewable energy resources in Turkey, and therefore geothermal resources, has been increasing rapidly in recent years. Today, Turkey ranks 4th in the world with its geothermal installed capacity. Considering the direct utilization of geothermal resources (other than heat pumps), Turkey is second in the world after China. Some of the most important applications of geothermal resources worldwide (geothermal greenhouse cultivation, fruit drying, CO2 extraction from fluid, urban heating and cooling) It is being carried out in Turkey.
In line with all these data and the importance of geothermal resources, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM continues to publish valuable studies that can contribute to the field and create platforms to encourage joint scientific publications among researchers, as in other academic journals it offers to the scientific world.
