MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center and ARF, One of the World's Most Powerful Supercomputers, Entered Service!
MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center Opening and ARF Supercomputer Launch Ceremony took place in Ankara on June 25, 2024.
A new achievement in the field of supercomputing has been added to the successes in the field of supercomputing with the project, which was realized in partnership with TÜBİTAK and Lenovo technology solution partnership and hosted by METU. This important step represents a great progress for our country's technological move.
Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, METU Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Verşan Kök, Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Europe, Middle East and Africa Region President Giovanni Di Filippo, Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Middle East, Turkey and Africa General Manager Alaa Bawab and Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Turkey General Manager Burç San attended the ceremony held at METU campus.
In his speech, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Minister of Industry and Technology, briefly stated that with the MODSİMMER TRUBA Data Center and ARF Computing Cluster, Turkey's scientific research competencies have been given a new dimension; with ARF, the 313th most powerful supercomputer in the world with a cost of more than 11 million dollars and a processing capacity equal to 35 thousand laptops, our researchers will be able to perform the simulations they need simultaneously in many strategic areas from the defense industry to the production sector, from drug design to disease detection.
TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal stated that this technological breakthrough will make significant contributions to Turkey's scientific and technological development and that TÜBİTAK is taking important steps to continuously improve and strengthen Turkey's IT infrastructure.
In his speech, Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu, Director of TÜBİTAK National Academic Network and Information Center (ULAKBIM), emphasized the importance of the point where data centers have reached and stated that Turkey has made a great breakthrough with the data center that has the most advanced liquid cooling technology in the world; that they are working with stakeholders METU, Sabancı University and ITU-UHeM to expand the use of the National Competence Center in order for our industry and academia to make better use of this infrastructure; and that the new system in the data center, which has many firsts with direct liquid cooling technology and back cover cooling technology, has 504 servers and 56 thousand cores.
Participating in the ceremony, Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo Europe, Middle East Infrastructure Solutions Group, stated that Lenovo aims to bring smart technologies to everyone, from mobile phones to computers, data centers and cloud solutions, and that they are very proud and happy to be opening the ARF Supercomputer project together.

After the speeches, we would like to thank Feyza Eryol, Onur Temizsoylu and Sefa Arslan, Senior Principal Researchers from the TRUBA team, and Hüseyin Atabay on behalf of TÜBİTAK SAGE for their devoted work and successful performance in the MODSİMMER TRUBA Data Center and ARF supercomputer commissioning processes; Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Europe, Middle East and Africa Region; Alaa Bawab, General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Middle East, Turkey and Africa; and Burç San, General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Turkey were presented plaques by Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Minister of Industry and Technology, for their cooperation. After the ceremony, the Minister and the participants inspected the new data center.
