MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center and ARF - One of the World's Most Powerful Supercomputers - In Service Now!
The Opening Ceremony of MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center and the Publicity Ceremony for ARF Supercomputer was held on June 25, 2024, in Ankara province.
With the project launched under the technology solution partnership of TÜBİTAK and Lenovo, hosted by METU, another achievement has been added to the previous ones in the field of supercomputing. This significant step represents a major advancement for our country's technological initiative.
The ceremony held at the METU campus was attended by Mehmet Fatih Kacır, the Minister of Industry and Technology; Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, President of TÜBİTAK; Prof. Dr. Mustafa Verşan Kök, President of METU; Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; Alaa Bawab, General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Middle East, Türkiye, and Africa; Burç San, Country General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Türkiye.
In his speech, Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, highlighted that MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center and the ARF Computing Cluster have introduced a new dimension to Türkiye's scientific research capabilities. He further mentioned that ARF, ranked as the world's 313th most powerful supercomputer with a processing capacity equivalent to over 35,000 laptops and a cost exceeding 11 million dollars, will enable our researchers serving in strategic fields, such as defense industry, manufacturing, drug design, and disease diagnostics, to perform simulations concurrently as needed.
Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, President of TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye), stated that this technological leap will significantly contribute to Türkiye's scientific and technological development and that TÜBİTAK is continuously taking important steps to enhance and strengthen Türkiye's informatics infrastructure.
Highlighting the significance of the current state of data centers in his speech, Director of TÜBİTAK National Academic Network and Information Centre (ULAKBIM), Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu added that, as Türkiye, they leaped forward with its data center equipped with the world's most advanced liquid cooling technology; stakeholders including METU, Sabancı University, and İTÜ-UHeM (Istanbul Technical University - National Center for High Performance Computing) are working together to expand the usage of this infrastructure within the National Competence Center studies, so that it can be utilized better by our industry and academia; and that the new system available at the data center, which features many firsts including direct liquid cooling technology and rear cover cooling technology, consists of 504 servers and 56,000 cores.
During his speech at the ceremony, Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, highlighted Lenovo's commitment to making accessible to everyone innovative products and smart technologies, ranging from smart phones to computers, data centers, and cloud solutions, and he also expressed how prideful and exultant they felt due to their collaboration on the ARF Supercomputer project and participating in its inauguration.

Following the speeches, plaques were presented by the Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, to reward the dedicated efforts and successful performance during the commissioning process of MODSIMMER TRUBA Data Center and the ARF supercomputer, to Senior Expert Researchers Feyza Eryol, Onur Temizsoylu, and Sefa Arslan from the TRUBA team, as well as Hüseyin Atabay from TÜBİTAK SAGE, and also to Giovanni Di Filippo, President of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Alaa Bawab, General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Middle East, Türkiye, and Africa, and Burç San, Country General Manager of Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group Türkiye, for their collaboration in the process. After the ceremony, the Minister and participants conducted inspections at the new data center.
