Research Data Management and Open Science Workshop was held

With the cooperation of TÜBİTAK, Boğaziçi University, Hacettepe University, Izmir Institute of Technology, the concept of "open science", one of the most important agendas of the world's academic circles, was discussed by all stakeholders at the Research Data Management and Open Science Workshop held at Boğaziçi University following Sabancı University.

In the workshop, which was attended by many academics from Turkey and abroad and experts working in the field of data, it was emphasized that data storage alone does not make sense, and that the world of science is now shaped by data sharing.

Boğaziçi University Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmed Özkan emphasized that open development of publications means open innovation. TUBITAK ULAKBIM Director Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu, He emphasized that technological opportunities have increased scientific contact.

Satoğlu stated that making data and the software that processes them open is a very serious opportunity for new advancements and that they are always following what is happening in the world and making the greatest possible effort not to fall behind. Following the opening speeches, various presentations were made by both local and foreign experts on research data management and open science, starting from the question "What is open science?".

The first session of the presentations held in four sessions was chaired by Prof. Yaşar Tonta from Hacettepe University. The session started with a presentation titled "The Chemistry of Open Science" by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Eroğlu, Vice Rector of Izmir Institute of Technology, and continued with presentations titled "Big Open Science in Practice" by Tim Smith, Head of the Collaboration, Tools and Implementation Group, and "Towards a Cultural Change in Data Management" by Marta Teperek, Data Management Coordinator at TUDelft University. The second session, chaired by TUBITAK ULAKBIM Director Mehmet Mirat Satoğlu, started with a presentation by librarian and information systems expert Elli Papadopoulo on "The Role of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) and the Mission of the Early Career and Engagement Partnership Group (ECEIG)", followed by Prof. Yaşar Tonta from Hacettepe University, Department of Information and Document Management on "Open Science Infrastructure and Research Data Management".

In the third session, which started after the lunch break and chaired by Ibn Haldun University Library Director Sönmez Çelik, İlkay Holt, one of the consultants of the Confederation of Open Access Repositories, presented "Framework Structures, Standards and Technology in Open Data Management", Gültekin Gürdal presented "Open Data for the European Union and OpenAIRE Advance" and Ebru Soyuyüce Aydın from TÜBİTAK presented "Towards Open Archive". In the last session chaired by Deniz Baltacı, Director of Sabancı University Information Center, Dr. Lect. Prof. Dr. Zehra Taşkın and Dr. Güleda Doğan's presentation titled "Research Data Management and the Situation in Turkey" was followed by the presentation of Assist. Assist. R. Orçun Madran's "How should Open Science and Open Data be?" and ITU's Zeki Çelikbaş's "Big Data" presentations followed.
