Started on September 1, 2020, the first year of the EuroCC Project, in which TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM is a partner, has been successfully completed. There are 33 participating countries in the project, which aims to establish National High Performance Computing (HPC) Competence Centers, to reveal national competencies in the fields of HPC, big data and artificial intelligence, to identify needs, to provide training and consultancy, and to initiate university-industry collaborations.
EuroCC Turkey, under the coordination of TUBITAK ULAKBIM and with the support of Middle East Technical University and Sabancı University, carried out successful activities towards the targets in the first year of the project. EuroCC Turkey has exceeded the minimum targets, and most of the 2-year targets were completed in the first year and the targets were raised. In this context, as a result of the first year evaluations, the EuroCC Turkey team ranked among the most effective countries among 33 countries in both the official affairs of the project and the work carried out.
In the project, many events were organized to raise the awareness of academia, industry and the public in the fields of AI, big data and artificial intelligence, to convey the advantages of the experience and resources available in the country and to encourage the use of AI technologies. Our events and the number of participants are given below:
Within the scope of the project, case studies are carried out with large, medium and small-scale companies (public or private sector) using high-performance computing technologies. Academic expert consultancy and TRUBA computing infrastructure support are provided free of charge within the scope of the project for case studies to solve the problem that companies address in order to improve their product quality. In this context, 15 case studies in the fields of machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data and data science, computational sciences were initiated in the first year of the EuroCC project. One of our main objectives in conducting case studies with SMEs is to take user groups to the next level, raise awareness of EuroHPC and the supercomputing ecosystem in Europe, and support them in applying for calls in this ecosystem.
In this context, three different SMEs, with which we conducted case studies in the first year of the project, applied for the FF4EuroHPC call. FF4EuroHPC is a European initiative that aims to enable SMEs in Europe to develop unique products and become more competitive by using ICT services. Awareness and information activities will continue on the different calls to be opened within the scope of EuroHPC.
In the second year of the project, EuroCC Turkey will continue to organize events to raise awareness and utilization of AMD in the private and public sectors. In addition, it is planned to accelerate the cooperation between SMEs and academia and turn some of our case studies into success stories.
