International Workshop on "Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Development" was Held

-A +A

Following the special issue of the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences on "Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Development" published by TUBITAK ULAKBIM, a webinar titled "International Workshop on Geothermal Energy for Sustainable Development-GeoESD2021" was held on December 8, 2021.

During the webinar, original studies were presented by researchers covering topics such as developments in the world related to geothermal resources published in a special issue, underground injection of CO2, various uses of geothermal fluid (agriculture, tourism, health, etc.), predictions of mineral extraction in geothermal systems, hot, dry rock technologies and their importance, and the role of using geothermal resources in reducing CO2 from fossil fuels in the world. The webinar, which hosted 19 researchers and featured 16 presentations, was watched live by over 100 people via Zoom and YouTube. It also presented the developments planned for the next ten years in geothermal energy and discussed what collaboration could be developed between the participants in this field. The tendency to evaluate renewable energy sources and consequently geothermal resources in Turkey has increased significantly in recent years. Today, Turkey ranks 4th in the world with its installed geothermal energy capacity. In terms of direct use of geothermal resources (excluding heat pumps), Turkey ranks second after China. Some of the most important applications of geothermal resources in the world (geothermal greenhouse cultivation, fruit drying, CO2 extraction from liquids, urban heating, and cooling) are carried out in Turkey.

In line with all these data and the importance of geothermal resources, TUBITAK ULAKBIM continues to publish valuable studies that can contribute to the field and create platforms to promote joint scientific publications by researchers, as in other academic institutions journals it offers to the scientific world.
